FAQ

What is a wholecloth quilt?

"Wholecloth" means the quilt top is one piece of fabric, with no piecing or appliques. Traditionally, a wholecloth quilt would have elaborate stitching patterns.

At HQ, we offer modern wholecloth designs that can be sewn by beginners, appreciated by quilters (no piecing or binding!) and enjoyed by everyone.

How do you make your wholecloth fabric?

Our wholecloth fabrics are screenprinted by hand, which means each piece is slightly different and unique. While we review each piece carefully before it is used, some colours may vary and small imperfections may occur. These variations are considered part of the charm of a handmade product.

What size is the quilt?

All of our quilts measure approximately 36"x36" finished - the perfect size for a baby quilt or wall hanging.

What is the quilt made of?

Our quilts are 100% cotton, including the wholecloth quilt top, batting, backing fabric and thread.

FINISHED QUILTS:

When do I use my quilt?

All the time, we hope! Here are some of our favourite uses:

  • blanket
  • changing mat
  • floor mat
  • highchair mat (once your baby starts eating solids, you'll see why)
  • picnic blanket
  • wall hanging

How do I take care of my quilt?

We recommend hand-washing your quilt, then hanging to dry. To press, place a tea towel between your iron and quilt. These steps will help preserve the ink in the quilt top.

Where are your quilts made?

The quilts are sewn in small batches in Toronto, Canada.

DIY KITS:

We designed these kits to make quilt-making easy. Instead of cutting and piecing together the different parts of a design, all you have to do is sew along the lines.

Do I need a sewing machine?

Not at all! These quilts can be sewn by machine or by hand, whichever you prefer.

What else do I need?

We recommend the following tools:

  • rotary cutter
  • quilting ruler
  • cutting mat
  • scissors
  • hand-quilting needle or sewing machine
  • curved safety pins
  • quilting pins or binding clips

How long will it take to make a quilt?

It depends on your level of sewing experience, but we consider this a weekend project.

Do I need to add binding to my quilt?

Using our technique, the backing fabric also becomes the binding for your quilt - no fussy strips!
